Taking their name from an area in New York states Hudson Valley where a spiritual fervor set the area ablaze so spuriously that the revival left most in the area convinced that religion was but a delusion.
Radical Calvinists, anarchists, mystics, baptists, gnostics, se'ers, spiritualists, and Pentecostals had all salted the area with so much exchange of free thought that religious leaders came to view the land as "burned over" and didn't deem to set up shop there.
Seattle's Burned Over District takes the same exchange of ideas from its two primary contributors Nick Nihil and Michael Crossley on the subjects of music and poetics with the conceit of looking at the Pacific Northwest music and literary scenes as the same sort of environment the duo takes its name from.
Lush and ambient electronic loops intersected by Nihil's jarring guitar work make an interesting mise en scene for Crossley's brooding verse.
